From PSD to Wordpress – A tutorial series

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Last Friday, we finally got Part I of our “From PSD to Wordpress” series out. From Photoshop to Wordpress – Part I – Design took quite a long time in coming and I was very happy to see it finally go live. I actually started writing this Part I back in August!

So what took me so long? I would reply the usual “lack of time” but a lot of it was mostly “lack of interest”. Just a few weeks after I started writing this tutorial, there came an influx of similar articles and tutorials so it really bummed me out (for a lack of a better word). I was wondering if I was doing the right thing. Then, I came to the realization that we needed this article on The Web Squeeze. We didn’t have one and that meant our public had to go elsewhere for the help.

We have quite a few knowledgeable members in the TWS forum for WP help so this article could hopefully bring a few of the WP beginners to the forum. Wordpress is by far the most popular blogging CMS. There is so many things/plugins/etc… that you can do/add that these types of tutorials, no matter how many there are, are all helpful in my opinion.

Even tho they all have a common goal, these tutorials are all done by different writers, therefore are all different. Techniques used, designs, ways to achieve the same results. The more techniques you know, the better you can create something more useful for your client.

So stay tuned for Part II – HTML/CSS coding to come sometime in the next month.

Some Tips & Tricks

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Just wrote a few Tips and Tricks over at The Web Squeeze. ID’s and Classes in CSS was posted last week and today, Extending the background around two floating div’s just went live. Obviously, these are intended for newcomers to the CSS game. Hopefully these 2 will help some of you out there.

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

That’s right! Wednesday will be know as the Wednesday Font Round-up day now on The Web Squeeze! Looking for fonts to go on a certain is always really fun … well… for me it is. I seem to get creative all of a sudden when I see a really cool one! That’s how the last 2 wallpapers came about. So I’m regularly checking out DaFont.com to see what new font’s been added to the site.

So this week we decided to start a new series that will be posted every Wednesday. It will showcase fonts and dingbats, most of them free but it might happen that we’ll put up a paying one that you just can’t get by!

So be on the look out! The August 20th, 2008 installment is up so go have a look. Let us know if you found some really cool fonts that inspired you to do something!

The Web Squeeze – V2.0

Monday, August 11th, 2008

After a frantic week of getting the last bits of the re-design ready to go, we finally launch version 2.0 of The Web Squeeze on Sunday morning!

Now I can relax. But not for long ’cause we have 2 GREAT projects in the works. One of them is headed by one of our Team Leaders on the forum (Rakuli) and we are very excited about that. We have a few other projects brewing so it’s very exciting times for all of us at The Web Squeeze.

One last thing… at TWS, we are always on the look out for writers so if you have an Web Design or Development articles or tutorials you would like to post on our site, give us a shout!

So please have a look and let us know what you think! And register on the forum, it’s a great community!

So many ideas, so little time.

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I feel like if I don’t put down all my ideas somewhere, my brain might explode from trying to save them all. I don’t know what it is really! Sometimes the creative juices are just overflowing and at other times… nothing! Well… seems like I’m in one of those creative slots.

There’s a few things I want to do with this blog and hopefully I will be able to keep it up. I want to start making backgrounds … don’t ask why but I’ve got just a bunch of different designs in my head right now that would be great for that.

Also, I know it’s a bit complicated because I always have 2 very distinct set of readers: the web design community and the jeepers, but there will be a new write-up coming soon on the install of my Xenon Flat Fender Flares. As soon as I can go through all the pics and my notes.

Which brings me to another thing. I know most people would separate both sections (Jeep VS Web Design). Have a different domain for each and it is something I have been contemplating lately. I love both! However, I feel like I don’t write enough about each subject to warrant 2 separate sites. Am I wrong? Time will tell I guess. And maybe if I get more time to go off-roading, I might have more to talk about? Hopefully that will come next year.

What else …. well… I think I want to get into WP designs. Putting out a few free templates and maybe some that could be good enough to warrant the Premium title that people would be whiling to buy. I’ve been doing A LOT of WP lately. This blog is/was my first WP site and I’ve learned a lot since then. We’ve converted The Web Squeeze to WP and we’re currently putting the finishing touches on the new design. And my latest is my husbands’ band site: Widow’s Walk.

The reason why I’m thinking of getting into WP themes/designs is, when I get into times like this – creative juices periods – I don’t want to loose those design ideas that I have stored in my head. I usually create what I call drafts and save them for a rainy day but this way, I could actually make a total site out of it and it wouldn’t get lost in the pipes like they usually do.

And going in to the same train of thought here, I will be making a series of tutorials on The Web Squeeze on (Part I) creating a site beautiful site in PSD, then (Part II) bringing that design in HTML/CSS and finally (Part III) setting it all up in WordPress. We’ve had quite a few requests for these tutorials so … I have my work cut out for me! ;) That would be my first free WP theme available for download.

So in the coming weeks, be on the look out for desktop backgrounds and maybe a WP if I have time.

Oh and one more thing… don’t be shy! Leave a comment! :)
